# Animated / GIF Profile

When a character's profile gives off the slightest movement, it pulls your eye right in — whether you're scrolling Explore or sitting in a chat room. A still photo just can't do that. That's exactly what the **Animated Profile** feature is for. Upload a GIF as your character's main profile picture or background, and even when nothing's happening, your character feels alive.

Let's be upfront about one thing first. **This feature is exclusive to the Platinum plan.** You can absolutely create characters without Platinum, but a moving GIF profile only switches on for Platinum members.

The upload itself isn't hard. It takes about **3 minutes**. Just follow along at your own pace.

***

## What is it? (One-line definition)

> **Animated Profile**: a feature that lets you drop a **GIF (a moving image)** into your character's profile picture or background slot, instead of a still image. Think of it like turning a frozen ID photo into a short looping video clip.

On top of that, Platinum members get a **Platinum badge** to go with it. It shows up small on the Explore page and on the character profile, so anyone can tell at a glance, "Ah, this is a Platinum character."

So to sum up, an Animated Profile gives you three things at once:

* **Animated profile image** — your main picture moves in a short loop
* **Animated background image** — your chat room and profile background go GIF too
* **Platinum badge** — shown publicly on Explore and on your profile

***

## Why use it?

* **It stands out.** Explore is wall-to-wall with still-image characters. In that sea of stillness, one gently moving profile is what makes a scroll stop dead.
* **It sets the mood.** A flickering neon sign, hair drifting in the wind, a candle flame swaying — one small bit of motion conveys a character's vibe far better than a single frozen photo ever could.
* **It gives presence.** Add the Platinum badge on top, and the same character suddenly feels like it had more care put into it.

***

## How to use it (about 3 minutes)

> **Check first:** this feature only switches on for the **Platinum plan**. On Free / Silver / Gold, the GIF upload option either won't appear or will be greyed out. If you're on Platinum, jump right in.

### Step 1 — Prepare your GIF file

Start by getting the **GIF file** you want to upload ready.

* **The file format has to be `.gif`.** (A still JPG or PNG won't move.)
* For a profile, a roughly square ratio fits the cleanest.
* A GIF that's too long or too heavy can load slowly, so we recommend a short, lightweight loop.

### Step 2 — Open the character edit screen

Go into the **Edit** screen for the character you want to bring to life. If you're in the middle of building a new character, the same thing applies at the image step of the character creation wizard.

### Step 3 — Upload the GIF to the profile or background

* **Profile image**: in the main image slot, select and upload the `.gif` file you prepared.
* **Background image**: upload the `.gif` to the background image slot the same way, and your chat room and profile background will move.

### Step 4 — Save and check

Hit **Save**, then open the character on the **Explore page** and in a **chat room** to confirm it actually moves. Once you've done that, you're finished.

> **Tip:** a small detail that catches the eye at a glance (a blink, a glow, a slowly swaying background) is easier on the eyes and feels more refined than a GIF where the whole screen is thrashing around.

## Which plans can use it?

The Animated Profile is **Platinum-only**. Here's a side-by-side look against the other plans.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q. I'm on Gold but the Animated Profile won't turn on.** That's expected. This feature is **Platinum-only**. To use it, you'll need to upgrade to Platinum.

**Q. My GIF isn't moving — it's frozen.** Double-check that the file you uploaded is genuinely a `.gif`. If it just has a `.gif` extension but is actually a still image (JPG/PNG), or it's a single-frame GIF, it won't move.

**Q. Does uploading an Animated Profile cost RP?** No. Uploading an Animated Profile itself doesn't cost any RP. It's a feature included with the Platinum plan. (RP is spent elsewhere — premium-model usage beyond your weekly allowance, image generation at 300 RP, Mood Snap unlocks at 50 RP, and so on. Choosing a longer response length is free to set — a longer reply just uses a bit more RP on that message when you're on a premium model, while the free Default model stays unlimited.) **Q. Can I make both the profile and the background GIFs?** Yes, both work. That said, to keep the screen from getting too busy, it looks better to let just one of the two move strongly.

## Wrap-up & next steps

* The **Animated Profile** is a **Platinum-only** feature that drops a **GIF** into your character's profile or background to bring it to life.
* All you need is one `.gif` file, and the job takes about **3 minutes**.
* The **Platinum badge** shows up alongside it, boosting your presence on Explore.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://powerfan-1.gitbook.io/redchat.app/guides/animated-profile.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
